Even those who buy brand new homes can’t escape the issues associated with cracking concrete slabs. This leaves many people wondering what causes concrete to crack in the first place—if even brand-new concrete is susceptible to cracks, what’s happening?
The reason even brand-new concrete can start to crack is because the cracking has almost nothing to do with the concrete itself. Issues arise when the soil beneath a slab washes out or compacts, leaving large voids of open space beneath the concrete. When this happens, your slab isn’t properly supported and the weight of the concrete will cause your slab to sink and, eventually, cracks will start to form.
